Education Provider Profile: Crumlin College of Further Education

In our continuing series focusing on partner education collaborating providers, which deliver the off-the-job training portion of the NHA, we look at City of Dublin Education and Training Board’s (CDETB) Crumlin College of Further Education, who will offer the apprenticeship in 2021. The College has built an excellent reputation over 65 years by providing education and training programmes of the highest quality. Niamh Ward, Principal at Crumlin College, has a highly motivated and dedicated team, who ensure that course developments match student requirements and industry trends through continuous innovation and stakeholder engagement.

Two phrases which often accompany any discussion on hairdressing education in Ireland are Crumlin College and Maura Clarke. Crumlin College first developed its hairdressing department in 1973 under the direction of Maura Clarke, head of that department until her retirement in 2008. During this time, Maura’s one wish was that Irish hairdressing would have a recognised apprenticeship and to this end, both she and Crumlin College has been actively involved in the evolution and development of hairdressing education up to and including the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship.

Gary Kavanagh a teacher who is held in high esteem by employers and educators alike says “after decades of anticipation, Crumlin College is delighted to be in a position to add the National Hairdressing Apprenticeship to its hairdressing awards. Hairdressing, as a career, has often attracted not just the creative but also the more adventurous individual, many of whom have travelled the world with their craft.  The NHA qualification will ensure that future overseas employment will become less problematic as candidates who successfully complete the programme will achieve a recognised qualification on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications”.
